New guide to boost feedlot cattle performance and welfare

A new best practice guide brings together key industry resources into a single, first-of-its kind reference to help grassfed cattle producers improve how feeder cattle are prepared for feedlot entry.

Developed by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the Feeder cattle preparation best practice guide brings industry knowledge together into a single, practical resource for producers.

MLA’s Feedlot Project Manager Liz Pearson said the guide simplified what can often be a complex process.

“This guide is about making best practice simple and accessible for producers,” Liz said.

“By aligning preparation practices with feedlot requirements, producers can set cattle up to perform from day one.”

The guide covers key areas such as yard weaning, vaccination, backgrounding and transport, and can be used as a full resource or in individual sections.

With feedlot entry presenting a heightened risk of stress and health challenges for cattle, improved preparation plays a critical role in reducing risks and improving performance.

“Better prepared cattle settle faster, have fewer health issues and deliver stronger returns for producers and lot feeders,” Liz said.

By providing clear, consistent guidance, the resource aims to support a more reliable supply of high-quality cattle and strengthen outcomes across the beef supply chain.
